Part 6 - How did you attract/ address your audience?
Strengths:
- "Graphics were different"
- "Liked the title 'open verdict' at the end"
- The groups appreciated the originality of the voiceover and how it furthered the narrative
- Credits were integrated on the labels which they felt was original and modern
- "Good use of camera angles and a range of shots"
- They understood the narrative clearly throughout with the qoute "i think the narrative was clear".
- The twist made the audience hooked into the film to know what happens
- The sub-genre of Romantic-Thriller was clearly created through the actions in the flashback.
Weaknesses:
- "The lighting was dark at points so we couldn't read it"
- "The graphics were good but a bit difficult to read and blurry"
- I believe that our shot variation was not as wide as we could have made it, becuase we wanted to capture a lot of close ups especially of the objects etc.
- The voiceover had some issues with sound levels but we feel that this was effective to connotes levels of anxiety during the scene.
I think that these are all valid weaknesses in our opening sequence. But i can justify an argument against them, for example, 'the lighting was too dark'. It could be argued that we tried to convey a noir style through the use of dark lighting which is the reason why we have used it.
Also the labels/credits which were difficult to read were due to the camera which we were restricted to using. The zoom was not good enough to create an extreme close up of the credits which we were trying to emphasise on the labels.
To improve our work i feel we should have use some more variation in shot types because the mass of close ups which were used to emphasise a prop such as the knife could have been conveyed through a different type of shot, such as a midshot to emphasis it is in the male characters hand.
I believe that we reached our target audience which we mentioned in our treatment of approximately 18-40 year old people. This was done through the use of elements such as camera, editing, mise-en-scene and sound. E.g. the voice over of the young 20's male character.

Sound Ideas
These are the kind of sounds and music we would like for our thriller
- Tense, slow music to set the scene and atmosphere.
- Sound of strings to get big loud sounds which will have an impact on the audience.
- Happy, romantic music for the flashback to create a contrast between the different scenes and characters state.
- Sound effects of rain and lightning to create the feeling of a dark and miserable time and showing pathetic fallacy as the characters are in the same state of mind.
- The voice over will also be a very important aspect of sound as it will indicate to the Audience what is happening and help to guide the audience into their lives. The dialogue will represent what has happened between them over time.
Overall all the sound we make will have a dramatic effect on how good our thriller is.If we don't get the sound right it wont have much of an effect on the auidience and the narrative of it.

Research into thrillers of similar genres
- A Voice over in the style of film noir which had a good script and was powerful enough to engage the audience into the lives of the characters.
- Dark lighting in keeping with the film noir style.
- Music and soudn effects that work well and in the style of film noir.
From the orphan opening we looked at how the music played a big part in engaging the audience and making hem feel tense and anxious. The first sounds we hear are soft music of piano showing a happy start of her being adopted this makes it easy for the music to change into something sinister reflecting how her character changes. The sounds that are used quite frequently during the opening were sounds of the wind and swinging of the swings. These types of sounds make it spooky and tense causing the audience to feel on edge not knowing what to expect. The music fits in well with the story and uses techniques of going from very quiet to loud to build up the tension and show that something is about to happen.
From the taxi driver we focused on how the voice over creates and sets the mood.It adds to the narrative and gives the audience an in site into the character and what to expect.
The voice over is clear and direct and just what the audience needs to know about his character e.g `the taxi driver is looking for a target' this makes the audience uneasy about what he is planning for his next victim. It also shows us a different side to the character and how he has become like this e.g The only moment in his life that will mean anything showing his only personal life hasn't satisfied him enough and now its payback. The voice over is important and must make sure it is done prisisely and fits with particular scenes.Overall the voice over gave us ideas as to the kind of dialogue we would use and how well it would fit into our narrative.
From the Life of David Gayle we looked at how the editing and camera work added to the creating the feelings of tension and suspense for the audience. It uses a lot of fades ans slow pace of cuts. This is to create tension fro the adience and not letting them know to much already. The voice over also gives the audience a second opinion on what has happened and how the characters are being portrayed. The use of angles vary showing a lot of high and low angles showing people of little and high importance.David Gayle is used in a lot of dark lighting in prison and bright lighting when it is flash backing on his life showing a contrast. We have used this technique in our thriller as well to show to different places in our characters life.
we looked at double indemnity as it is a film Noir style thriller including voice over.We looked at how the voice over works well with the narrative and characters also how the voice over was used and what kind of dialogue was used to follow the narrative and the characters. We used this style of voice over, the old Hollywood style this creates a story for the audience to follow and engage in.The style of lighting we used to keep with the film Noir era.We used this type of style as it was different and none of the other groups used this kind of style. This thriller gave us a lot of ideas for the voice over and what sort of narrative it was going to be based on.
Overall All these openings gave us ideas as to what type of voice over we wonted, the sounds and music we would like to use and the kind of shots and angles that will work well.

PreProduction - Film Noir Research

We looked at the film noir genre of thriller and found it interesting to take on this and integrate it into our opening thriller. It is completely different to thrillers nowadays unless they are specifically filmed in the style as film noir e.g the lighting, editing, music and camera.
Film noir started in the early 1940s-50s.It was famous for film which included stylish Hollywood crime dramas emphasizing on cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. It is recognised because of its Film noir of its a low-key black-and-white visual style. Its history dates back to crime fiction that came and was influenced by the United States during the Depression.
The sub genre of the thriller is Criminal. It usually involves a murder, this is an element of almost all film noir. The themes that arise are some like greed, jealousy, deception .The characters you would typically find in a film noir are a private eye, a police detective (sometimes acting alone), or a concerned Friend of victim.is this gives them a basic plot.
The protagonists are usually involved with something dangerous or bad e.g cons or adulterous affairs. The plot adds False suspicions and accusations of the crime that taken place showing the audience betrayals and double-crosses. The protagonists are usually women as affairs are included in the plot in quieter allot of film noir. Most are based on the male being the lying cheat and the women taking revenge for what they have done.
The film noir interested us to use this style as our plot is similar to the typical stories. We know that no-one else will try and film it like this and will make it a unique selling point.Having the voice over will make it more interesting for the audience as they are getting one view of the death from seeing it and another from hearing about it.
we looked at some of the famous film noir films which has helped us see how the lighting camera editing and mise-en-scene works well with the plot.
We looked at this example of film noir and specifically focused on the voice over. He is looking back on a event that has happened saying the date where he was and how he felt. Already we can see the lighting is set low key black and white style which gives an effect if a dark mysterious story,It has already identified one character in the first shot making the audience ask questions like who is he what happened to him what is he recollecting.
This was an interesting one as even the trailer stating the actors and what awards he had one was done in a film noir voice over style already engaging the audience into who he is, what will he do to his victims etc.

Worksheet Analysis - One Hour Photo
Inside Man

The Life of David Gale

It is a political thriller dealing with the controversial topic of the death sentence.
A man (David Gale) against capital punishment finds himself accused of the murdering of a fellow activist and is sent on death row.He then explains his story to a reported who then follows his life up until the time of his trial. The film is from his perspective and how events that he was accused for are reenacted showing the real truth of his innocence.
The opening
It opens the credits small lettering and white coloured causing tension and suspense. The use of no sound at the beginning works well to create an atmosphere for the audience. There is no music to start with but the sound of the wind in a remote desert area. The long shot creates suspense and that someone is watching the car. This makes the audience feel uneasy and curious as to where it is and what tone to expect for the rest of the film. The audience are made to ask questions when the women gets out of the car and starts to run e.g why is she running? what is she running from?who is she in the plot and were does she fit into the story. The music starts to build as she starts to run portraying she is panicked and desperate to get somewhere. The use of a pan from her feet to her head slowly lets the audience see her identity for the first time as before it was hidden by the the dark lighting.Cuts were used to the present to let us see who the women really is and how her character plays an important part in the narrative.
Red herring were used to show the wrong lead dusty showing his relationship withConstance (murdered character) and how they made us think he was responsibly for her death. It challenges the audience to make there own perceptions of the character and who they think was responsible. flash forwards were used throughout the film as he was telling the reported events from the past but still keeping the with the present,to show David Gale re telling the events leading up to the trial. An example were this is used is when it goes back to when the allegations started of.He was a professor and slept with his student who accused him of rape, flashbacks were used to create suspense.Dramatic irony was also used to show this and the audience knowing that it wasn't rape and she consented to it.Pathetic fallacy was used to create a dark atmosphere e.g when they are driving through the town of Huntsville it is dark and makes us feel uneasy going into the unknown place for the audience and characters. It sets the scene of the murder story.
The Shining
The shining is a psychological thriller as it deals with the change of attitudes and mind turning evil. It includes allot of violence and distress.
Outline of the story:
A Family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter holidays. This is an evil and spiritual presences influence the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific things from the past and future.
Opening:
It starts of with a deep sounding music showing us the woodland mountain areas, lakes and roads. The credits were slow paced and had a neutral colour making the audience feel uneasy and unsure. It impacts the audience well as the music causes us to be anxious, scared and apprehensive as to what is going to happen. it follows a car driving through the area which would e the family. It makes the audience wonder what is so evil in this area? What is going to happen to them on there trip? Who lives there? Being able to question it makes it appeal more to the audience as they want to carry on watching out to find out the next bit. Cuts were made to show each area of the mountains making us wonder what significance it has to the story and characters.
Thriller conventions used were?
Dramatic irony is used thought the film as we know when Johnny is going to latch to his next victim. Foreshadowing is an important one used as well as the music makes us know when something may happen e.g. build up of the music becoming louder or quieter or no music at all. Flash forwards were used to show the little boys state of mind thinking into the future and having bad thoughts. There is a twist as you don’t expect Johnny to fall down the stairs in the scene with his victim; you always associate the antagonist to have the control and upper hand over the victim’s actions.
Codes used to add to conventions were?
The Camera used hand held, long shots and close ups. The hand held created a realistic account of the victims feeling and panic when being faced with Johnny e.g. when Johnny is walking towards her up the stairs the cameras angles it low to show it from her perspective as well angle ling it high for his. Close ups of his coming towards them. The most famous scene shows how simple editing can have the biggest effect on the audience appeal for examples cuts from his and her reactions makes the audience feel suspense and scared for the victim. The audience has an insight into Johnny character already by the close-ups of his face. The use of dialogue and setting helped to make it more thrilling for the audience e.g. him putting him self as the bad wolf from a fairytale. The editing had a lot of Long takes sop the audience wouldn’t expect something out of nowhere to happen, making it more interesting. The setting made it realistic and contrasting the situation with an ordinary setting which the audience feel comfortable and aware of in there own lives. The music helped to create constant tension and suspense throughout by increasing the speed and level of volume and tone for the biggest impact on audience’s reaction.
Does it fit into typical thriller conventions?
In my opinion I feel it has all the conventions of a thriller and portrays this well through the codes to create the feeling of panic and horror for the Protagonist and a sense of cat and mouse for the Antagonist.

Strengths & Weaknesses
- There was a strong and well established narrative.
- Good use of High Angle at the stairs showing vulnerability.
- Match On Action + 180 Degree rule were both done with strong execution and success.
- Some points the long takes were not necessary as suspense was already built up.
- Lighting in the room at the end was partially yellow, would have had a better effect if the lighting was darker, with the use of black gels etc.
